Letter from the Editor
by Maureen James
The heart of our mission at Glass Patterns
Quarterly will always be to provide
inspiration and information to artists who
create in the wonderful medium of glass.
Barque
Design by Robert Oddy
A 12" x 17-3/8" nautical panel for advanced
artists. Drapery glass is used to create a
billowing effect for the sails, and copper
and brass wire are fashioned into realistic
rigging. A plated glass section represents
land veiled in a mist. Copper foil overlay
also adds to the depth of the panel. This
project is constructed using the copper foil
technique.
Autumn Splendor
Design by Carol Giffen
A 1" x 1-1/2" fused pendant decorated with
Dicro Slide and PMC+ Sheeting. Silver and
copper inclusions appear as leaves for the
tree design. A paper punch is used to cut
the intricate shapes from PMC+ fine-silver
clay for the various design elements.
Autumn Acorn Beads
Design by Lori Greenberg
Flameworked beads fashioned from Effetre
rod, sprinkled enamel, and stringer dots.
Tips are offered for mixing molten glass to
achieve new colors. More depth and texture
are added to the beads by encasing opaque
glass with transparent glass and by making
layered stringer.
All You Wanted to Know about Cutting Glass
by Alan Toy
The first of two parts of an expansive
overview of glass cutting basics. The
article teaches the proper techniques for
cutting glass, tips for learning the feel of
the correct amount of pressure to use when
cutting, and the background behind why glass
behaves as it does.
Mica Foil Dish
Design by Brenda Griffith
An 8-1/2" fused and slumped dish decorated
with frit and mica powder. The use of the
powder provides an inexpensive alternative
for adding brilliance to fused pieces.
Information is provided for making a sheet
of mica from powder and incorporating it
into the dish.

Rooster Mosaic
Design by Melanie Churchill
An 11-1/2" x 15" free-form mosaic rooster. A
rooster-shaped wooden base is used as the
foundation for the project, and the bird’s
feathers are created using pieces that have
been nipped from glass strips. The design is
sealed with colored grout.
Finishing Touch
Design by Elaine Fossler
A 7-1/4" x 9" free-form stained glass
snowman fan light. Details are added with
copper foil overlay. The design can be
adapted for a large or small fan base. This
project is constructed using the copper foil
technique.
Beveled Santa Portrait
Design by Jennell Hogue
A 16" round portrait panel created using a
Mika bevel kit. Detailing is added with
copper wire, and the finish-solder color is
selected to match the foil backing since it
will show through the bevels. This project
is constructed using the copper foil
technique and is intended for crafters with
an intermediate skill level.
Aloha in Glass—Hawaiian Quilt Designs
Design by Leslie Gibbs
A set of 5-1/2" x 5-12" fused and slumped
glass quilt-block dish made from Wasser
glass. These designs represent those used in
the traditional quilt patterns of the
Hawaiian Islands and are accomplished by
using Flash glass with the design etched
onto it, a base color for the bottom, and a
clear top layer for sealing the dish and
giving it a glossy finish.
Prancing Carousel Horses
Design by Marianne Crivellaro
Two 8" circular stained glass panels with
free-form border. Careful placement of the
pattern pieces on the glass helps to bring
more realism to these panels, and optional
jewels can be used to add more sparkle.
These projects are constructed using the
copper foil technique.
